Goring CE Primary: Curriculum Intent: Maths
The 2014 National Curriculum for Maths aims to ensure that all children:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics
- Are able to reason mathematically
- Can solve problems by applying their Mathematics
At Goring CE Primary, we provide an ambitious maths curriculum, ensuring ensures that our children develop a deep knowledge and understanding of mathematics that embeds and progresses knowledge consistently over time. We want all children to enjoy mathematics and experience success. We aim to encourage a positive attitude alongside a natural curiosity so that children can appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics. We want to ensure that children understand the importance of maths in the wider world so that they are able to use their skills and knowledge confidently in their lives in a range of contents and make rich connections, developing their fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving problems.
Curriculum Implementation
At Goring CE Primary, a maths mastery approach is used to consolidate the foundations that children need to study maths successfully and to a high level. Children study mathematics daily covering a broad and balanced mathematical curriculum including elements of number, calculation, geometry, measures and statistics. Alongside daily maths sessions an additional 15 minutes a day is spent focusing on ‘maths flash’, which aims to build fluency in calculation and retention of taught concepts over the longer term. In the teaching of maths, we use a wide range of representations to broaden, embed and deepen understanding across a range of contexts. We also ensure vocabulary is taught explicitly to support children’s understanding.
Part of the mastery approach is to ensure that all children are confident in their understanding of yearly objectives and therefore we aim for this rather than accelerating them to new content. To support this, we will use a range of online resources to ensure we teach a curriculum that is specific to each child’s learning needs.
Where possible, we aim to teach maths in a cross curricular manner as well as discretely to teach the practical application of mathematical skills.
Homework activities are set through a choice list in Key Stage 1, or by MyMaths and timestable practice in Key Stage 2. Any homework given aims to consolidate learning within school and further engagement with the subject.
From the 2019/20 academic year onwards, schools in England will be required to administer an online multiplication tables check (MTC) to year 4 pupils. The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided. To support the children with their multiplication practice we use ‘Times Table Rockstars’ as an online and fun learning platform which also offer resources to be used in the classroom.
