Goring CE Primary: Curriculum Intent: History
At Goring CE Primary, we will provide an ambitious, interesting and varied curriculum that exposes children to a range of exciting and relevant moments from history, enhancing their knowledge and skills as historians. Within our teaching, we will ensure that there is a diverse representation of the past so that children can see themselves represented within our curriculum. Our children will use historical enquiry questions during their lessons which will emphasise the core knowledge that they need to know about the past. This will allow them to develop their understanding of the complexity of people’s lives throughout time, build their own understanding of the diversity within societies and the relationships between different groups of people. As part of our history teaching, we will specifically highlight the history within our school’s locality and the local links that our area has to moments taught within our history curriculum. We will inspire children’s natural historical curiosity and equip them to ask questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective judgements. By the end of their time in Goring CE Primary School, our historians will be able to evaluate a range of historical sources and interpretations, and explain clearly how they can give us an insight into how people around the world used to live, and how these interpretations differ.
Curriculum Implementation
History is taught in blocks throughout the year to allow children to focus on developing their knowledge and skills, studying each topic in depth. We ensure that we teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear set of progressive knowledge and skills. These are sequenced appropriately to maximise learning, enabling the children to build on prior knowledge. Teachers understand the key knowledge and skills of each topic and ensure that there are regular opportunities to review the learning that has taken place in previous topics as well as previous lessons.
In KS1, history begins by looking at the children’s own personal history and introduces them to the idea of chronology and timelines. Children in KS1 also look at significant events and people who have shaped society, locally, nationally and globally. This is then built on in KS2 where children study aspects of local history, British history topics and ancient history topics.
We enrich children’s understanding of historical periods and concepts through fieldwork, trips, visitors and other sources. We use historical artefacts to excite and intrigue our children to find out more about events and people from the past.
