Geography is the study of the Earth; the landforms, physical processes and human systems. It helps us to understand the world we live in. Studying geography deepens our understanding of the world around us and the interaction between humans and their physical environment. It provides us with knowledge of our planet that has helped shape our history and will continue to shape our lives in the future.
At Goring C of E Primary School, our ambitious geography curriculum will inspire children with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, equipping them with knowledge of diverse places, people, resources and human environments. As pupils progress through the school, our geography curriculum will ensure that they develop an understanding of the interconnectedness of Earth’s key physical and human processes, and recognise how these have changed over time. We prioritise the use of our local area so our children see that geography is immediate and all around them. The more we learn about God’s created world, the more we can learn to love and look after it, and this is a central message of our school curriculum vision. By the end of their time at Goring C of E Primary, our children will be global citizens who are aware of and understand the wider world and their place in it. It is our hope that our children will go on to take an active role in our community and work with others to make our planet more peaceful, sustainable and fairer.
Curriculum Implementation
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, to flourish and become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.
Geography at Goring C E Primary is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear knowledge and skills progression. Existing knowledge is checked at the beginning of each topic, ensuring that teaching is informed by the children’s starting points. Our approach ensures that knowledge and skills are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.
It is important that children build on their knowledge to develop the skills of a geographer by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject. We will enrich our geography curriculum by providing first hand experiences such as school trips and fieldwork which enhance children’s understanding of the world beyond their locality. Where necessary, we will also utilise our local area (both on and off school site), and provide opportunities for learning outside the classroom.
