Goring CE Primary: Curriculum Intent: Art
At Goring CE Primary, we provide an ambitious, inspiring, practical art curriculum which builds on children’s early creative experiences and their natural desire to express themselves. By its nature, art is a curriculum area which supports children’s mental health and well-being, and at Goring CE Primary we provide children with a broad range of opportunities to express themselves through art. We give children opportunities to explore and investigate a range of materials, to gain knowledge of these, to develop skills and techniques, which they can use to express their ideas, feelings and experiences.
The art curriculum is designed to be progressive allowing children to build on skills, knowledge and techniques year on year. The children will develop ideas whilst learning to use a range of materials competently (understanding their limitations and possibilities) and make art which focuses on a range of visual and tactile elements.
Children will learn about artists from different points of society (including from our locality), and also art from history and places in the world; they will begin to have an appreciation of how the context shapes the work of those artists. Children will be encouraged to discuss their likes and dislikes about art work, developing and justifying their choices and preferences.
Children will leave Goring CE Primary with the confidence to explore resources and artistic opportunities. They will have an awareness of creativity in their everyday lives.
Curriculum Implementation
At Goring CE Primary School art is taught across the school. Each child has a sketchbook which follows them with their creative journey through the school. We encourage ownership of their sketchbook in order to foster their sense of creativity- making initial sketches, developing skills, recording ideas and developing opinions with annotations. Throughout their journey, every child is given the opportunity to learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, sculpture and digital art. They are introduced to a wide selection of artists, craftsmen and designers from a range of backgrounds and are encouraged to critically reflect on their masterpieces. The children are encouraged to offer and accept constructive advice while looking at the work of their peers. The specific needs of the individuals are always of paramount importance to all teachers, especially the needs of SEND in the school
Teachers follow a clear comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. This progression of skill provides the opportunity to build on the pupil’s prior knowledge. To support teaching, staff have access to a range of resources, planning and specific training in identified areas for development.
The governors liaise with the subject leader in order to monitor the impact of the art curriculum in Goring.
EYFS
Through Expressive Arts children are encouraged to explore different media, explore how media can be combined to create different effects and develop a range of skills and techniques experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Within the Early Years setting there is a continual provision of artistic resources which the children can access on a daily basis.
